The Long Way Round
Finding Purpose in Building People, Organisations and Ecosystems
Joe Quarcoo
Memoir-led narrative nonfiction · In production
What can a life that refuses to move in a straight line teach us about purpose, leadership and contribution? Drawing on a journey through psychology, teaching, business, public planning, research, community development, ministry, music, migration and frontline social care, Joe Quarcoo explores the golden thread beneath an unconventional career.
Starting again is not the same as starting from nothing.
Some careers move in a straight line. Others are shaped through detours, migration, institutional change, failure, reinvention and the unexpected return of abilities we thought we had left behind. The Long Way Round asks how we can interpret those experiences without romanticising hardship or measuring an entire life by its latest job title.
Why I wrote this book
I turned forty knowing that my life had not been wasted—but also knowing that I had not arrived.
My journey had moved through psychology, university teaching, business, public planning, research, community development, ministry, music, migration and frontline social care. There was experience, contribution and achievement, yet the conventional language of a career could not explain how the pieces belonged together.
The Long Way Round grew from that tension—and from recognising how many other capable people quietly wonder whether they are behind, fragmented or beginning again too late.
This is not a victory lap written after every uncertainty has been resolved. It is an honest account from inside the journey: an attempt to understand the pattern beneath a non-linear life and the purpose that can emerge through building people, organisations and ecosystems.
The book asks a deeper question than ‘What should I do with my career?’
Can I build a meaningful life from where I am?
Who the book is for
The Long Way Round is for anyone trying to make sense of a life or career that has not followed a straight line.
- 01People changing careers or rebuilding after a major transition
- 02Migrants whose present job title does not reflect the full weight of their experience
- 03Professionals who appear successful but no longer feel fulfilled by the path they are on
- 04People who feel late, overlooked, underrecognised or uncertain about what their accumulated experiences mean
- 05Founders, leaders and community builders learning how to serve without becoming indispensable
- 06People reconsidering their relationship with an institution, organisation or faith community that helped form them
- 07Young adults facing pressure to identify one perfect career or purpose
- 08People beginning again after redundancy, disappointment, failure, caregiving, illness or personal disruption
- 09People with several interests who have struggled to compress their identity into one professional label
- 10Readers asking what their work makes possible for other people
You may be twenty and uncertain, forty and rebuilding, or sixty and wondering whether another meaningful chapter remains. The book does not promise a predetermined map. It offers stories, questions, frameworks and companionship for interpreting the road you have already travelled.
More than a career memoir
Through stories drawn from work, leadership, migration, faith, failure, creativity and community, The Long Way Round examines the relationship between personal agency and the systems within which people make their choices.
- Recognising the golden thread connecting apparently unrelated experiences
- Understanding why starting again is not the same as starting from nothing
- Distinguishing between being needed and building people who can lead
- Examining how personal agency interacts with institutions, systems and circumstances
- Learning from failure without pretending every hardship was necessary
- Honouring an institution without allowing it to own one’s identity or calling
- Understanding why purpose should produce something beyond personal fulfilment
- Converting experience into wisdom, service and new possibility
Each chapter turns the story back towards the reader through reflection questions and practical frameworks. The purpose is not to reproduce Joe’s route, but to help readers examine the evidence of their own lives more honestly and deliberately.
The journey through the book

Learning to Be Needed
Early experiences in psychology, teaching, business and institutional life—and the gradual formation of an identity built around usefulness, responsibility and being relied upon.
Part II
Building Things That Matter
Public planning, community development, menstrual-health innovation, leadership, Voice1Africa and the complicated work of turning ideas into organisations and collective action.
Part III
When the Road Breaks
Institutional disappointment, difficult questions about loyalty and faith, migration, frontline social care and the experience of beginning again without beginning from nothing.
Part IV
Finding the Golden Thread
Music, creativity, leadership beyond the founder, human flourishing and the recurring pattern that connects an apparently fragmented life.
The book moves through seventeen chapters, four extended reflections and an epilogue. Its stories range across Ghana, South Africa and the United Kingdom.
Questions for the road
What remains of your professional identity when the title changes?
Which experiences have you dismissed because they do not fit your present career?
When does being needed stop being evidence of effective leadership?
How can we acknowledge structural barriers without surrendering personal agency?
What institution are you treating as though it owns your calling?
What becomes possible for other people because you lived?
What if the long way round has been gathering material for your next contribution?
