Navigating the Maze
Finding God in a Systemic World
Joe Quarcoo
Faith-centred guide · Guiding Light Press · Forthcoming
Navigating the Maze is a faith-centred guide for people trying to remain hopeful, discerning and responsible while moving through institutions and systems that can feel complex, impersonal or overwhelming.

When the systems meant to serve us become difficult to navigate
Modern life is organised through systems: healthcare, employment, education, immigration, housing, law, finance, technology, government and even religious institutions. At their best, these structures preserve life, establish rights, organise care and help communities flourish. Yet they remain human systems—limited by the knowledge, character, incentives and imagination of the people who build and operate them.
Navigating the Maze begins with the experience of entering a system whose scale, language and authority can make an individual feel small. It asks how people of faith can recognise institutional limitations without abandoning evidence, lawful processes, professional help or their responsibility to act.
Why this book
Joe Quarcoo writes from the meeting point of pastoral reflection, lived experience, public systems and a longstanding concern for people who feel overlooked or overwhelmed. Experiences across Ghana, South Africa and the United Kingdom sharpened his awareness of how deeply systems shape people’s safety, opportunity, dignity and sense of agency.
The book grew from a persistent question: where do we place our ultimate trust when the structures on which we depend are delayed, strained, confusing or unjust?
Rather than encouraging withdrawal, suspicion or passive spirituality, Joe offers a path of active faith—one that prays, seeks evidence, asks questions, involves wise counsel, accesses professional support and takes the next lawful and courageous step.
A practical framework for active faith
The book’s MAZE Framework combines spiritual discernment with responsible action. It is not a promise that every institution will yield or every difficulty will disappear. It is a memorable discipline for recovering clarity and identifying the next faithful step.
Map the system
What is its purpose? Who makes the relevant decision? What rules, deadlines, responsibilities and appeal routes govern it?
Assess the reality
What evidence is available? What remains uncertain? Where are the risks, assumptions, biases and power imbalances?
Zoom out
What do Scripture, prayer, wise counsel, professional expertise, history and community reveal?
Engage wisely
Document, prepare, seek help, appeal or escalate lawfully, act courageously and entrust the outcome to God.
The framework refuses both helplessness and reckless certainty. Sometimes engagement produces change. Sometimes it protects others, creates a record or gives strength for faithful endurance.

Faith, evidence and care
The book brings together Scripture, pastoral reflection, lived experience, public records and testimonies of faith. It recognises that these sources do not all provide the same kind of evidence and should not be made to perform the same function.
Prayer and professional care are not rivals. The book does not encourage readers to abandon medical treatment, lawful reporting, safeguarding, evidence or specialist support. Instead, it recognises that God frequently works through clinicians, public institutions, law, communities, professional knowledge and collective action.
This book is written for general educational, pastoral and inspirational purposes. It is not legal, immigration, medical, mental-health, financial or safeguarding advice. Readers should obtain current guidance from appropriately qualified professionals for their circumstances.
More than a book to read
Every chapter is built to help readers move from reflection into responsible action.
Maze Marker

Faith in Action

A Prayer for the Journey
A short prayer grounding the reader’s discernment in dependence on God.
The Personal Maze Map helps readers name their situation, identify the decision-maker and process, separate evidence from assumption, recognise risks and power imbalances, seek spiritual, community and professional perspective, and identify the next lawful and proportionate action.

The book does not guarantee particular outcomes. It offers companionship, discernment and a practical discipline for engaging faithfully with the systems that shape our lives.
Neither blind trust nor automatic hostility
The answer to imperfect systems is neither blind faith in institutions nor reflexive hostility towards them. Navigating the Maze proposes discernment: gratitude where systems serve, evidence where they make claims, challenge where they cause harm and reform where we have influence.
The maze is real, but it is not ultimate.
